Acoustic therapy (noise generator, music therapy, noiser)
Based on the theory that auditory impressions can be influenced by certain associations, special tones are used to treat tinnitus. These are intended to help draw attention away from the ringing in the ears and push it more and more into the background. Tinnitus sufferers hear a noise through a corresponding device.
With a tinnitus masker, the noise drowns out (‘masks’) the tinnitus and should eventually eliminate it. Some people experience a training effect after just two months. However, clinical studies show that maskers or noisers do not guarantee that the ringing in the ears will disappear completely. There are also CDs with appropriate masking noises that tinnitus sufferers can listen to through headphones, for example.
A tinnitus noiser, on the other hand, produces sounds that do not mask the tinnitus but distract from it as background noise. The brain can thus be retrained over time to perceive the sounds differently, the tinnitus is no longer as prominent and becomes more bearable. Tinnitus sufferers wear the device like a hearing aid for at least six hours a day. It is sometimes used for up to two years or more, ideally as part of tinnitus management therapy. CDs or other sound sources can also be used to create a desired noise level in the background.
