Dizziness / Balance

Describing the type of dizziness is very important for the doctor in order to determine the cause and decide on a course of treatment.

Dizziness / Balance

When a person is dizzy, they feel insecure due to the rotation or swaying of their surroundings.

Describing the type of dizziness is very important for the doctor to determine the cause and decide on a course of treatment.

The organ of balance is located next to the inner ear. The ENT doctor therefore checks whether there is an ear disease and/or a disease of the organ of balance. Since dizziness or problems with balance can also have other causes, the ENT doctor may consult other specialists (e.g. neurologist, cardiologist, internist).

The feeling of dizziness gives a person a lack of orientation in space. Everything seems to be spinning, “steadfastness” is no longer guaranteed, and general discomfort accompanies this feeling. Our orientation is based on three pillars:

  • the organ of equilibrium in the ear
  • the visual system
  • the proprioceptive system (information flow to the brain via the sense of touch, joints and muscle movements)

As soon as one of these systems is diseased or the regulatory capacity of the brain is disturbed, dizziness becomes noticeable.

An accurate diagnosis can lead to an effective, detailed treatment.

First of all, the doctor works with the patient to create a precise medical history. This is followed by a specialist examination by an ENT doctor. There are various diagnostic procedures such as measuring eye movement, positional testing (for positional vertigo), and the head impulse test (helps to distinguish between neurologically induced vertigo and inner ear vertigo).

In addition, there are a number of examination methods that use the latest technology to test coordination or measure certain parts of the vestibular system. Computerized tomography or magnetic resonance imaging can also provide information about the origin of the vertigo in the patient's body.

Based on the determined cause, a therapy is coordinated that can be medication-based or even targeted vertigo training.

Guiding principle

Our treatments and therapy recommendations are based on the needs of the patients in accordance with the application of modern medical research results in order to meet the demand for an optimal treatment result.
