Dizziness therapy
Dizziness is always a key symptom of various illnesses. Above all, the cause must be treated. Dizziness is usually caused by a malfunction of the equilibrium organs located in the inner ear. Another vital function of the equilibrium organ is to control eye movements.
Nevertheless, it must be taken into account in the diagnosis and treatment that the equilibrium organ alone is not responsible for dizziness.
The normal function of the equilibrium system requires the symmetrical ‘input’ of movement information from both equilibrium organs into the brain. This system processes the information from the peripheral (external) equilibrium organs and carries out a central compensation. This compensation mechanism is constantly active, e.g. when we are lying, standing, sitting or walking.
In our practice, the various forms of dizziness are treated by
- conversations
- information about the disease
- prescription of medication
- instruction in dizziness exercises (postural exercises or ‘liberation manoeuvres’)
- as well as recommendations for physiotherapy and/or psychotherapy and, if necessary, surgical measures
In the case of drug-based vertigo therapy, a distinction can be made between prophylaxis, i.e. the prevention of vertigo symptoms, and acute or long-term therapy for existing vertigo. Dizziness exercises involving head and body movement are a method of treating positional vertigo by supporting central compensation. In general, surgical therapies are not necessary for vertigo disorders.
