Therapy approaches
In the treatment of chronic tinnitus (existing for more than 3 months), psychotherapeutic methods (e.g. tinnitus retraining therapy) and acoustic procedures are available. The aim is to train the patient to live with the sound in the ear, to turn his attention to other things, to ignore the noise and thus reduce the impairment caused by the tinnitus and to strengthen the joy of life.
Noise generators or tinnitus noisers are also used for this purpose and specifically programmed to the tinnitus of each individual patient. Furthermore, patients have the opportunity to get to know newer therapeutic approaches (e.g. music therapy, acoustic neuromodulation). These newer techniques aim to “unlearn” the tinnitus tone. This is done painlessly with targeted acoustic signals that disrupt the abnormal nerve cells in the auditory center.
The technique used must be tailored to the respective tinnitus type. This is done through a therapy that is individually tailored to the patient.
The goal of this interdisciplinary approach is to reprogram auditory memory while simultaneously identifying stress factors and positively influencing them with complementary treatments, either through psychological, manual therapy or relaxation therapies.
The effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy has been scientifically proven (evidence-based medicine, EbM level IIa).
Tinnitus Coping Therapy
With the help of this therapy, the patient should classify their tinnitus as unimportant and reduce the associated fears, as well as strengthen their zest for life.
